A Ministry of Economic Development report from 2003 said that 86% of NZ firms have up to 5 employees and account for about 20% of the economy's output but only 10% of wages and salaries paid to employees.

The NZ Companies Office counts registered companies. A registered company is not necessarily trading. Kompass is activity based so it does not profile registered non-trading companies.
Yellow, Finda or Zenbu will list anything with a phone number. Kompass is focused on B2B companies and does not include any old retail shop, although it does profile the head office of large retail chains because of their size and importance.

An "Enterprise" is "A business operating in New Zealand. It can be a company, partnership, trust, estate, incorporated society, producer board, local or central government organisation, voluntary organisation, or self-employed individual."
The Kompass target excludes most of this by size and industry but a careful analysis shows our database to be very close to the size it should be.
